Water all over De Lutte

All I can think of today is water, water, water, water, water, water, water, water, water, metres high! I was visiting my parents in Swabia when last Thursday the rain came down upon our Stal Het Osterbrook – and didn’t stop. Gert-Jan then made an emergency call and I went home on the Friday as fast as I could. I have never seen anything like it, I can tell you!. Behind the walking stable, the rain had swept away any entire fence. But the horses couldn’t have run away anyway; they would have had to swim...

The water had almost swept away our manure container of a depth of 2.5m. What came down there in De Lutte on that day was the amount of rain that usually comes down there in one month. So we had to pump and wipe the water and dirt away as best we could. And we were lucky. The contractor who currently is moving earth on our site had left an excavator.

He used it to dig trenches and to divert the water. Who knows what would have happened if he hadn’t done that... After four days of cleaning up - and a bit of riding - it is all quite all right now. However, a lot of hay and straw had been flooded too. And the fence has not yet been rebuilt. The event we had mentioned had to be cancelled anyway. I’m really glad that neither humans or animals were hurt. Our foals even seem to have had some fun in being the ones in the dry and safe barn :)
